Many families are unfamiliar with the role of a funeral celebrant. If you have recently lost someone and are considering a celebrant-led service, this guide will walk you through the process — from our very first conversation to the ceremony itself. Understanding what to expect can bring a small measure of comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

A funeral celebrant is an independent professional who creates and conducts personalised ceremonies. Unlike a vicar or religious officiant, a celebrant has no doctrinal requirements — meaning the service can take any form you wish, at any location, and can include music, readings, rituals and personal touches that truly reflect the person you have lost. Celebrant-led funerals are now one of the most popular choices for families across the UK.

When you first contact me, we will have a gentle initial conversation by phone or email. I will explain how I work, answer any questions you have, and begin to understand your situation. There is absolutely no pressure or obligation at this stage. I understand that picking up the phone at such a time takes courage, and I am always here to listen.

We will then meet — usually at your home — where I will listen carefully to your memories and stories about your loved one. I want to understand who they were: their personality, their passions, their sense of humour, the relationships that mattered to them. This conversation is the heart of everything I do. From it, I write a complete ceremony script, including the eulogy and all the words that will guide the service.

I send the draft to you for review and we refine it together until it feels exactly right. On the day itself, I arrive early, liaise with the funeral director, and lead the ceremony with warmth, dignity and composure. I aim to be a calm and steady presence so that you can focus entirely on saying goodbye. Afterwards, I provide a printed copy of the service for you to keep as a lasting memento.
